Cat Pregnancy (Feline Gestation) Guide

Cat pregnancy, also called feline gestation, lasts approximately 63–65 days from mating. Unlike dogs, cats are induced ovulators β€” they only ovulate in response to mating. This means conception almost always occurs very close to the mating date, making our cat pregnancy calculator quite accurate when you know the mating date.

The typical range of 58–71 days means kittening can occur more than a week earlier or later than the average. Kittens born before day 58 are usually premature and need special care. If your cat reaches day 67–68 without kittening, contact your vet as post-term pregnancies can be risky.

Preparing the Kittening Box

By week 7–8, set up a quiet, warm kittening box in a private area. Line it with newspaper and soft towels. Introduce your cat to the box early so she becomes comfortable with it. Keep the room at 70–75Β°F (21–24Β°C). Newborn kittens cannot regulate their own body temperature and depend on warmth from their mother and environment.
